The Rising Sign

We are grateful for the insights of Robert Schmidt.

The first angle in the chart

1st House: It symbolizes your entry into the world and is associated with physical appearance, how you were raised, your conduct and your life overall very generically. Stars in the 1st House are carried by zodiacal motion to the 2nd House but never get there because the diurnal motion keeps them in the 1st House. In other words, those things come right back at you which is why they’re indicative of the self.

We don’t teach physical appearance. We are not vain. We don’t care how other people look. We are not aware of any Greek or Roman astrologers who discuss it. Since it’s incredibly generic and mostly wrong, we see no value in it. How people look has little to do with what happens to them.

We don’t teach personality. An adult who doesn’t already know what their personality is doesn’t need astrology. What they need is the best team of psychiatrists money can buy. That being said, there are aspects that indicate character traits. That is another facet of Modern astrology and Funshine astrology that fails. Not only are their claims about personality wrong, they don’t tell you the things you really need to know about someone, like whether they’re an adulterer, a liar or just plain evil.

2nd House: Stars in the 2nd House move toward the 3rd House but the diurnal motion carries them back toward the 1st House. The obvious symbolism is that the 2nd House supports or props up the 1st House. For that reason, the 2nd House is those things that support your life which are your income, possessions, the real estate that is your home, the real estate you rent or lease for income, your investments, your assets, your business partners, and anything you do that would result in an economic benefit to your well-being.

If you are confused it’s probably due to the fact that you were misled by the Arab and Persian astrologers and those who came after them. We do not teach horary astrology. This is natal astrology. Yes, when you cast an horary chart, electional chart or other such chart the 4th House is real estate and the 5th House is assets and the 7th House is business partners, but we ain’t doing horary, are we? No. Everybody get over it.

12th House: The motion of the signs carries stars in the 12th House to the 1st House but the diurnal motion turns them away. That is why the 12th House is a “cadent” house — it’s turned away from the 1st House. The symbolism is those things you lose (including your life) through illness, injury, crimes against you, legal actions resulting in loss, your freedom whether due to captivity, incarceration or addictions like substance abuse, and dangerous travels especially those that are involuntary.

  1. It’s interesting to observe though that the 1st house sign may actually carry some significance when it comes to one’s appearance: my 1st house is Aries(the Ram) and with my protruding cheeckbones as well as oval face and my hair pinned up at the top of the head I sort of look like one (ram) hahaha! My female friend’s 1st house is Scorpio and she kinda looks a bit like Morticia Adams with her long, straight dark hair and another female I know with her plump face and an aureole of curly hair does resemble a lion which is the image of her 1st house.

    • Yes, we noticed it’s sometimes easy to tell the Saturns (and their narrow faces) from Moons (and their rounded faces). Hunter’s a Gemini and he still looks like he’s not a day over 40. Lydia’s a Scorpio-rising and she has long dark hair, too.

      • Happy to hear that’s not only my observation :). That would be really exciting to figure out the correlation between somebody’s look and that person chart’s properties= perhaps one day :).
