Counteraction by Sect
Very simply, this is a case where a diurnal star is in a nocturnal sign whose domicile master is a nocturnal star or a nocturnal star in a diurnal sign whose domicile master is a diurnal star.
Like we said, you have to master the concept of joint domicile masters to get this right. You are looking at the domicile master, not the domicile ruler.
We’ll start with the houses of exaltation first:

For five of the signs you can see the dichotomy. You have either a diurnal star as house ruler and a nocturnal star — a star of the opposite sect — as exaltation ruler or a nocturnal star as house ruler and a diurnal star — a star of the opposite sect — as exaltation ruler.
Diurnal House Ruler – Nocturnal Exaltation Ruler
- Jupiter-Venus
- Saturn-Mars
Nocturnal House Ruler – Diurnal Exaltation Ruler
- Mars-Sun
- Moon-Jupiter
- Venus-Saturn
Nocturnal House Ruler – Nocturnal Exaltation Ruler
- Venus-Moon
Is Saturn harmed in Pisces?
That depends. When Jupiter is domicile master, the answer is “no” since you’d have a diurnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a diurnal star.
But if Jupiter is in aversion, you have a problem because either exaltation ruler Venus or the trigon rulers (Moon or Mars) are going to be the domicile master and in that instance, all the possibilities are nocturnal stars. Saturn would be a diurnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star and that is a problem for Saturn.
That is counteraction by sect. It isn’t a fatal flaw but it would impeded Saturn who is likely to act malefic especially if the chart were nocturnal.
Is Mars harmed in Pisces? Yes, when Jupiter is domicile master because you have a nocturnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a diurnal star. Again, if Jupiter is in aversion, no problem. If Venus aspects Pisces then Venus is domicile master and you have a nocturnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star (the best case scenario) so no harm, no foul for Mars. Should Venus be in aversion then Mars as a water trigon ruler is posited in Pisces and Mars is the domicile master (unless Moon aspects Pisces from a superior house).
Kamala Harris

The Jupiter in this chart is problematic for a number of reasons, least of which is the fact that Jupiter is retrograde. Jupiter in Taurus is harmed by being a diurnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star since the domicile master is Venus. Generally speaking, Sun and Jupiter do not do well in Taurus unless Saturn or diurnal Mercury are co-present or ruling Taurus.
Venus is a nocturnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by Mercury who is nocturnal since the chart sect is nocturnal. No, Venus is not in “fall” but Venus does have a major problem.
Sun is a diurnal star in a diurnal sign ruled by a diurnal star, namely, Saturn. Plus, Sun is in a right trine to Saturn so that’s like heavenly bliss there. As we mentioned earlier, the only ding on Saturn is he’s retrograde.
Mars is a problem. Mars is a nocturnal star in a diurnal star ruled by a diurnal star since Sun is domicile master of the Leo 3rd House. Why isn’t Leo Mars a problem for Donald Trump? Because Leo Mars in his chart is in his own bounds and since the chart is diurnal, Mars will function like Mars in Aries.
Ava Sambora
Let’s look at other situations.

Aries Saturn squares the Capricorn 7th House. Saturn is retrograde. Retrograde means what it means 100% of the time in 100% of charts no exceptions ever. If you don’t know what retrograde means, go to the Retrograde Motion tab and learn. Poor girl hasn’t even married yet (as of this writing she’s still planning her wedding) and her marriage already sucks. We could tell her that, but she’d marry him anyway, because “she loves him.”
This is another chart with Sun opposition Saturn, which means what? Yes, she’ll die a difficult death. Sun and Saturn are in mutual reception by exaltation. How’d that work out for Lee Harvey Oswald? It didn’t. On a more positive note, at least she won’t get shot like Oswald did.
But, that is not what we wanted you to see.
Mars is in aversion to the Scorpio 5th House. Scorpio is not a sign of exaltation. The water trigon rulers are Moon and Jupiter. Moon is in the Scorpio 5th House. Jupiter squares from the 8th House. Since the 5th House is superior in rank to the 8th House it makes Moon the domicile master of the Scorpio 5th House.
“But I want Jupiter to be domicile master because he’s lucky!”
We’re sorry, but “I can violate the rules of astrology whenever it makes me feel all better inside and I get a warm tingly sensation running down my leg” is not one of the rules of astrology. Moon “rules” the Scorpio 5th House. Period. End of story.
Moon is a nocturnal star in an nocturnal sign for which Moon is also the domicile master. What’s the problem? No problem at all.
That’s what we wanted you to see.
“But Moon’s in “fall” in Scorpio!”
There’s no such thing as “fall” (or “detriment”). Get a Dremel® tool, drill a hole in your skull, take a butter-knife and scrape out the words “fall” and “detriment” from your astrology vocabulary.
Venus is a nocturnal star in a nocturnal sign (Scorpio) ruled by a nocturnal star (Moon). Problem? No problem in astrology.
Now, what if Jupiter was in the 11th House? Jupiter would be in a house superior to Moon making Jupiter the domicile master of the Scorpio. Now you do have a problem because Moon and Venus are nocturnal stars in a nocturnal sign ruled by a diurnal star.
That’s what we wanted you to see.
Station-checking. On the 7th day after birth stationary Jupiter turns direct.
Moon right square Jupiter means what? Great fame and fortune. But it won’t last. That’s an event aspect meaning it will manifest as an event just like the Saturn right square Jupiter in Kamala Harris’ chart (and Trump’s chart) manifested as an event. Scorpio and Aquarius are solid signs (fixed if you prefer) so only once in her life. Jupiter is where in the phase cycle? The setting phase so it will happen later in her life like from the late 40’s an upward.
Oh, yeah, see Venus right square Jupiter? That’s a bad square but being in fixed signs that event will only happen once in her life around the same time as the Moon right square Jupiter event occurs.
That’s how you interpret charts.
John Lennon

In Lennon’s chart, Jupiter and Saturn are counteracted by sect since they’re both diurnal stars in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star. Venus is domicile ruler and domicile master of the Taurus 2nd House.
Mars is in aversion to the Scorpio 8th House. Since there’s no exaltation ruler, the water trigon rulers are Moon, Mars and Jupiter and we’ve disqualified Mars. Moon and Jupiter both aspect the 8th House but Moon in the 11th House outranks the 2nd House where Jupiter is, so Moon is the domicile master of the Scorpio.
The chart is nocturnal. Mercury is a member of the nocturnal sect so Mercury is a nocturnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star. If Moon were in aversion, then the domicile master would be Jupiter and Mercury would be counteracted by sign since Jupiter is a diurnal star.
Moon is counteracted by sect since Moon is a nocturnal star in a diurnal sign ruled by a diurnal star.
Interpretive Principles
Saturn is said to cause tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, shipwrecks, boating accidents, drownings and other water mishaps.
Why?
Saturn has affinity with air, earth and fire signs, but not water signs. Saturn in a water sign with sect mate Jupiter as domicile master performs well in an advantageous house. But when a nocturnal star is domicile master of the water sign Saturn is posited he’ll wreak havoc and even more so if in a house without advantage.
Jupiter has affinity with fire, water and air signs but no affinity with earth signs. Jupiter is very uncomfortable in earth and even more so with a nocturnal star being domicile master.
Jupiter is not the domicile master of the Sagittarius 9th House but he is still the domicile ruler and our house delineation principle is domicile ruler of the 9th House in the 2nd House.
There’s no such thing as “foreign travel” in astrology. The 9th House is “travel away from home” or “being away from home.” Was Lennon away from home? Sure. He was in Hamburg, Germany which is certainly a foreign place but was it profitable? After their managers and producers and everyone else with their fingers in the pie got their cut, the Beatles barely had enough money to cover living expenses. Yes, they made money later.
What else is the 9th House? Wisdom and learning. Didn’t John “travel away from home” all over Britain chasing after Indian yogis and even traveled to India? Whatever he was searching for he never found it. What he did find was drugs. He was a dope-fiend and LSD-freak. He was physically and verbally abusive to Cynthia which is why she divorced him. He wasn’t physically violent with Yoko but didn’t hesitate to verbally degrade and debase her at every opportunity and even abandoned her for two years while he ran around with his mistress May Pang.
That’s the great irony. He preached peace but acted the opposite. Lennon was neither a nice guy nor a good person. He did, however, have lots of money and society tolerates jack-asses with money.
When John was traveling away from home touring the United States and other countries with the Beatles, yes, they made lots of money but there were myriad problems which is one reason (of several) that the Beatles stopped touring.
Retrograde Saturn is domicile ruler and master of the Capricorn 10th House and Aquarius 11th House. If you don’t already understand the meaning of “retrograde” you need to learn. His career effectively crashed and burned. He wasn’t nearly as successful with his solo career like Paul McCartney was and he took a 5-year hiatus. When he returned in 1980 with his Double Fantasy album the critics panned it and it was a commercial success only after Lennon died tragically.
Make sure you understand sect. The diurnal stars have their own agenda which usually conflicts with the agenda of the nocturnal stars. That’s why we look at counteraction by sect. Earlier we said sometimes the diurnal stars help the nocturnal stars or the nocturnal stars help the diurnal stars and that usually happens with mutual reception or through figures and configurations.
Is a diurnal star being in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star worse than it being in a diurnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star OR are they equally bad (and vice versa for a nocturnal star).
Hey there, again. That’s counteraction by sect. It’s a minor ding depending on chart sect.
Robert Schmidt likens sect to political parties. In the U.S. unfortunately we have only Republicans and Democrats but sometimes the Republicans cooperate with the Democrats and sometimes Democrats cooperate with Republicans.
The obvious question is when will that happen? We can know that from the signs and sect.
In the chart of Kamala Harris you have Jupiter in the Taurus 12th House in a right trine to Venus in the Virgo 4th House and Venus is domicile ruler and master of Taurus (since Moon is in aversion in the Aries 11th House).
Will Jupiter cooperate with the Venus? Yes. Why? Two reasons:
1. Taurus and Virgo communicate so Jupiter will play ball with Venus; and
2. Jupiter is a diurnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a nocturnal star
But what if Venus was in the Taurus 12th and Jupiter in the Capricorn 8th House and Saturn in the Pisces 10th House?
That’s a bad trine. Capricorn and Taurus do not communicate so Jupiter will not work well with Venus and Capricorn Jupiter would be a diurnal star in a nocturnal sign ruled by a diurnal star, so they aren’t going to work together. That trine will function more like a square than a trine because Venus is going to be very resistant to Jupiter.
Ah okay. For me I believe Mars would cooperate with Saturn since Cancer/Libra see and hear each other (aka communicate) and Saturn is domicile master of Mars correct?
Spencer, would it be possible to name which sign cooperate and which don’t?
“Oh, yeah, see Venus right square Jupiter? That’s a bad square but being in fixed signs that event will only happen once in her life around the same time as the Moon right square Jupiter event occurs.”
If I may ask: what does Venus right square Jupiter mean?
“Venus right square Jupiter” means Venus is in the 10th sign from Jupiter meaning Venus is in the superior position to Jupiter. The star on the right is listed first.
Thank you for your time and goo will to help WaterElement 🙂 but I was asking about the meaning behind this particular configuration.
Here it is, found among articles on this blog :):
“Venus right square Jupiter indicates adultery, illicit love affairs or sordid romances.”
Oh my bad lmao. Yeah I would have pulled that up I misread.
Alright Water Elemental. Way to be.
Hey, Aleksandra. We have to apologize for the delay. Venus right square Jupiter indicates adultery or illicit sex which is usually paying for sex or having sex to get money or some other benefit (like a pay raise or promotion or the starring role in a commercial) or sex with people way beneath one’s dignity or status (in America that would be someone of high rank or status having it on with trailer park trash).
It doesn’t mean they do it every day or every every week or every month. In the U.S. adultery is defined as one or both parties being married (but not to each other). A single person could have an office romance with a married co-worker then later on get married and never commit adultery.
Jessica Hahn has Venus right square Jupiter but Mars is co-present with Venus. In a woman’s chart that’s an indicator of rape, sexual assault or some other form of sexual trauma. In a man’s chart it indicates he commits rape or sexual assault. Jessica Hahn was drugged and raped by the “Reverend” Jim Bakker and another “man of god.” That isn’t the only indicator of sexual trauma in a chart.
Hunter, could you talk about hmmm warning signs in someone’s natal chart? Perhaps a separate article only about that would be a good idea? You know, how to tell if a native will be raped (men can be raped too, after all), murdered, robbed, left without a roof over one’s head, let down by best friends, manipulated by others into something against one’s conscience, kidnapped for ransom or for organ trafficking, kept as a modern sex/ work slave but also commit something unspeakable in the future like killing someone etc.
I must say I have quite a bit of fear reading some of articles here as I wonder if that could be about me, not only bad things happening to me, but also finding out some ugly truth about myself…It’s really tough reading at times. For example, cheating on somebody is big “no-no” in my head but I have Venus in 0 degress of Pisces in right sextile to Jupiter and Mars in Taurus 2nd house, and so I wonder… After all you mentioned that stars at the beginning or end of a sign can form out-of-sign aspects… I really would hate to learn that one day I would cheat as that would break something in me mentally-I simply don’t want to be this way, nor I ever has been so far, so I would welcome some additional information to assess if something will come to be based on my or my friends’ charts or not.
Hey, Aleksandra. The whole point of astrology is accuracy. People are whatever they are but we don’t want to accuse people of being something they’re not nor do we want to needlessly frighten people. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially in astrology. That’s why we don’t teach predictive methods to beginning students or inexperienced astrologers. It’s necessary to interpret the entire chart and that means interpreting derivative houses, but in order to interpret derivative houses one has to be able to interpret the basic houses first.
Yes, Pisces is a promiscuous sign, and Venus in Pisces does indicate promiscuity but only when Venus is in a certain part of Pisces. It should come as no surprise that is in the degrees near the exaltation point of Venus. Even so, there are other considerations like chart sect and whether Venus is in a rising or setting phase. You don’t have to worry about it.
Just a heads up, we’ve been debating the last couple of days and decided to do topical delineations instead of house delineations so we’re having to change things around. The good news is a topic is related to one or more houses and there are aphorisms associated with them. An aphorism is a highfalutin word for “sayings.” Rhetorius says Moon and Sun conjunct in the 6th House creates madmen, epileptics or deranged persons and Mercury in the 6th House makes ill-advised persons, thieves, those wanting other people’s possessions, slanderers, incompetents and those who get a bad reputation. Are those true or not, and if they are true, why are they true, and if not true why aren’t the true. In some cases those are true only if other conditions exist in a chart.
You’ll see lots of aphorisms if you read astrology texts so we hope it will be helpful.
I have been reading Ancient Astrology Theory and Practice: Matheseos Libri VIII and I have been keeping in mind that those things are true if only conditions mentioned (and conditions not said) are met. I do admit it is a bit jarring at first. It is especially difficult as someone who has more than 2 (4 to be exact) stars blending together in the same sign.
