Spear-Bearing
This is another concept mangled so badly by the Arab and Persian astrologers that the Renaissance astrologers messed it up even worse. The Classical astrologers couldn’t understand it. It got dumped by Modern astrologers who couldn’t figure out how to pervert spear-bearing into something totally useless.
We cover the three types of spear-bearing:
Spear-bearing pulls together a number of different concepts so be sure to have a good understanding of them.
- Chariots
- Sect
- Rays
- Figures
- Enclosure
- Intervention
It is painfully obvious from the texts that spear-bearing is a sect-based concept. For a quick review:
- Team Sun (Diurnal Sect): Sun, Jupiter and Saturn
- Team Moon (Nocturnal Sect): Moon, Venus and Mars
- Common: Mercury

That would be Mercury. It seems to us there are issues, namely can Mercury be a guarded star or a spear-bearer?
We think not. Yes, we know Antigonus identifies Mercury as a spear-bearer in the chart of Emperor Hadrian, but we think Antigonus is a bit over-exuberant. Remember that you are allowed to use common sense in astrology. If Mercury could be a spear-bearer or a guarded star then no less than 50% of the population would be famous people with celebrity status wielding power.
The truth is just the opposite. 85% of the population are nobodies, not that there’s any thing wrong with that. After all, we all wanna be big stars….
