Affliction
Affliction draws on the concepts we’ve covered to this point. If you do not have a full understanding of the concepts you’ll struggle judging the condition of stars and misinterpret the chart. If you’re coming from “traditional” astrology your understanding of “affliction” is wholly corrupted because the Arabs and Persians mangled these concepts so badly by the time you get to the Classical era the concept of “afflicted” was totally bastardized. Affliction occurs when:
- The stars are struck by the rays of both Mars and Saturn
- The stars are enclosed by the malefic rays of Mars and Saturn by figure or bodily joining
- The stars are engaged to Mars or Saturn in the same degree or Mars is engaged to Saturn in the same degree by a hex, square, trine or opposition figure
- The stars engage Mars or Saturn, or Mars engages Saturn within 3° in the same sign
- The stars are overcome in a right square by a malefic located in a house without advantage (Mars or Saturn overcome each other when in a right square from a house without advantage)
- The stars are in opposition to Mars or Saturn when Mars or Saturn are in a house without advantage
- The domicile master of any star is located in the 6th House or 12th House
- Any star is domiciled in the 6th House or 12th House.
Affliction automatically makes a benefic function like a malefic or does it require other factors as well?
