Affliction by Overcoming
Affliction by overcoming occurs in one of two ways: Overcoming from the 10th sign or from opposition. In both instances, the malefic must be in a house without advantage. When the malefics are overcoming each other by opposition, both must be located in a house without advantage.
In our experience, affliction cannot occur when the stars have separated. The two stars must be forming a figure and that figure must perfect meaning if either of the two stars involved change signs before perfecting the square or opposition there is no affliction.
When the malefics are forming a right square with benefics, the malefics cannot be in the same degree as the benefic. You will understand why when we discuss glorification.
Overcoming from the 10th Position

Mars in the Taurus 8th House overcomes Venus in the Leo 11th House with a right square from a house without advantage. This chart hopefully clears up any confusion people have. Venus is the faster star applying to Mars but Mars is in a right square to Venus. Mars in a place without advantage overcomes and afflicts Venus. Recall the places without advantage are the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th Houses. When the MC Point falls in the 9th House the places without advantage are the 2nd, 6th, 8th and 12th Houses.
Moon co-present with Mars indicates an untimely or sudden death. The fact that Moon-Mars are in the 8th House is pure coincidence because it doesn’t matter which house Moon-Mars are in barring any mitigating factors and there are none in this chart. Eisele died of a heart attack in Japan while on business.
Of course, you already knew that since Sun opposition Saturn always indicates a difficult death.

Mars in a right square to Venus indicates infidelity or problems with women or both and it doesn’t matter if the chart is for a male or female. Moon right square Venus gives success but the price one pays is scandals usually involving women, and again, it doesn’t matter whether the cart is male or female. The woman could be the mother, mother-in-law, daughter, the spouse, a co-worker, or some tawdry wench. Eisele was having an extra-marital affair and was effectively grounded because of it which is why he resigned. Quite likely the only reason he made it into space is because Grissom, Chaffee and White died in the fire in Apollo 1 causing the team Eisele was on to get bumped up for the next manned Apollo mission.
Venus is in the bounds of Jupiter who is under Sun’s beams. Secrets. On a brighter note, he did marry the woman he was having an affair with after he divorced his first wife.
Afflicted Venus is the domicile ruler and domicile master of the Libra 1st House which is his life.
Like we mentioned previously, the domicile master of the Ascendant afflicted never reach that pinnacle in their life.

Mars overcoming Sun in a right square from the Cancer 12th House (a house without advantage). Since Mars separated from Jupiter, Mars does not afflict Jupiter. Afflicted Sun rules what in this chart? Correct, Sun is the domicile ruler and master of the Leo 1st House.
That is not the only problem in this chart. Mars right square Jupiter heightens extreme anxiety when coupled with Saturn right square Sun. Mars right square Jupiter also indicates myriad problems compounded by Saturn right square Jupiter. Saturn right square Jupiter means:
- Failure; or
- Demotion, loss of position or loss of power; or
- Loss of income, possessions or property; or
- Disturbing event
Since neither Jupiter nor Saturn have anything to with the 10th House we can rule out “demotion” leaving us with:
- Failure; or
- Loss of income, possessions or property; or
- Disturbing event
Since neither Jupiter nor Saturn have anything to do with income and since Mercury is present in the Virgo 2nd House with Mars and Saturn in a right sextile to Mercury generally indicates success (although not when Mars and Saturn are in the 12th House) we can rule out loss of income narrowing our choices down to:
- Failure; or
- Disturbing event
The key here is Mars in exact opposition to the Lot of Fortune. We haven’t discussed the Lots yet but Fortune signifies the body, health and emotions. With Mars being domicile ruler and master of the Aries 9th House and two major indicators of anxiety you can conclude this person will suffer a mental illness. That is not a reason to end one’s life as that person did, but trying to convince someone with a mental illness that they’re not a failure is easier said than done.

Mars in the Leo 8th House (a house without advantage) overcomes and afflicts Jupiter in the Scorpio 11th House.
So, apparently, left-wing extremists like the same clothing styles as right-wing extremists. Didn’t see that coming.
A couple of left-wing extremists saw a large number of right-wing extremists shopping for chic clothing. Heavily outnumbered, the common sense thing to do is drive on and mind your own business. Instead the left-wing extremists starting texting friends calling for reinforcements. Forty minutes later, the left-wing extremists attack the right-wing extremists and our victim is among the left-wing extremists and gets beaten to death.
Is it really that odd that Jupiter is in the Scorpio 11th House? It’s a house of one’s associations. Some of them might actually be friends but most are just associates you sit around with sipping wine and eating cheese and talking shop.
Mars is the domicile master of the Sagittarius 12th House since Jupiter is in aversion and even though Sun is present in the Sagittarius 12th House, the 9th House is superior to the 12th House.
Overcoming by Opposition
Prince
Mars in the Aries 6th House afflicts Jupiter in an overcoming opposition.
Afflicted Jupiter is the domicile ruler and master of the Sagittarius 2nd House. Your delineation principle then is domicile ruler-master of the 2nd House in the 12th House. The 12th House can be dumbed down into a single word: “loss.” The 12th House like the 3rd and 9th Houses is also a house of travel. Like the 3rd House and 9th House, the 12th House is not “foreign travel.” The 12th House is simply “travel away from home” or “being away from home” just like the 3rd and 9th Houses but with a twist: that travel results in loss.
12th House travel is typically related to:
- Fleeing a conflict (like a refugee)
- Forced relocation (like in a natural disaster such as Chernobyl)
- Fleeing political, religious or cultural persecution (which usually does result in actual foreign travel)
- Criminal flight (for whatever reason, criminals in the U.S. like to flee to Florida or California after committing their crimes)
And one other form of travel…
- “going astray on the wrong path”
That’s what most translate as “self-undoing” and we accept that definition since it fits perfectly.

What kind of sign is Libra? An active sign. That’s something Prince does rather than something that happens to him. Recall the chart of Princess Grace with Venus in the Libra 12th House. That was something she did to herself. The Taurus 7th House (a house of death) is what happened to her. But she was unconscious! Yes, she certainly was but the fact remains she was in the driver’s seat when she played Wily E. Coyote and drove her ACME Roadster over a cliff (just like in the cartoon but without a happy ending).
Jupiter is afflicted so the things Prince does causes his own self-undoing and what is he doing (or un-doing)?
Jupiter. What is it’s nature? What does it do? Jupiter affirms or stabilizes.
Mercury. What is it’s nature? What does it do? Mercury argues or destabilizes.
You can’t help but notice Mercury’s houses (Gemini and Virgo) are in opposition to Jupiter’s houses (Sagittarius and Pisces). Like the Man said, “Jupiter is the ruler of possessions and abundance, while Mercury is always the master of arguments. The intellectual faculty is always contrary to, and ridicules the desire for possessions, and abundance is contrary to what is intellectual.”
“Abundance” is another way of saying “hedonism.” What is the source of that hedonism? Jupiter is domicile ruler and master of the Sagittarius 2nd House. Money. Prince’s wealth allowed him to indulge in every hedonistic materialistic infantile urge imaginable and that included the abuse of drugs like fentynal and oxycodone.
Are there any checks on Jupiter? Mars is goading Jupiter from the 6th House and that never ends well. Mercury is domiciled in the Gemini 8th House showing Prince the door to his grave and what is Saturn doing? Is Saturn rejecting or restraining?
No. Look at the signs. Saturn’s in Sagittarius. Jupiter’s in Libra. That’s mutual reception by house-exaltation. Saturn’s like, “Do whatever you want. I’ll get the last laugh.”
See Sun opposition Saturn? You should already know by now that means a difficult death. We’ve still not encountered any mitigating factors. Ava Sambora is what, age 25? She has Sun opposition Saturn and if she started on a organic vegan diet and drank nothing but naturally distilled rainwater to preserve her precious bodily fluids and did yoga, meditated, chanted, cast spells, waved crystals around, burned candles and incense and exercised, she will still die a difficult death because that is her fate, just as it was Prince’s fate (and all the others) to die the way he did.
One other reason we chose this chart was to purple rain all over the people who think planetary joys are a real thing and something to get excited about.

Recall that this chart has no domicile master for the Pisces Ascendant.
Saturn is glorified by Jupiter since Saturn is in a right sextile to Jupiter and they are in the same degree.
Sun is doubly afflicted. Sun is afflicted once by being domiciled in the Leo 6th House and then afflicted again by the opposition from Saturn. But one of the keys to this chart is understanding Mars does not rule the Scorpio 9th House. He’s merely the domicile ruler and located in the 8th House. Where are the two water trigon rulers? Jupiter and Moon are both in aversion in the Aries 2nd House.
We have to go to the water triplicity rulers and the only available candidate is Venus. So Venus is the domicile master of the Scorpio 9th House. Sadly, Venus is afflicted by Sun since Sun is self-afflicted by being domiciled in the 6th House and afflicted again by Saturn. As we’ve said, water and earth occupying the 9th House is often an indicator of mental illness. In every chart? No, we don’t knee-jerk. We read the chart. When the 9th House is water or earth and there is no domicile master, or the domicile master is afflicted or in bad condition it does indicate.
Recall again that passive earth and water signs reflect something that happens to you in contrast to active air and fire signs that indicate something you do. For that reason, air and fire occupying the 9th House and the domicile master afflicted often indicate epilepsy, schizophrenia and other such mental defects. We’re reluctant to characterize schizophrenia as a mental illness since schizophrenics didn’t do anything wrong. It isn’t their fault. They literally have a defect in the brain. If you’re wondering why it doesn’t manifest earlier in life like in elementary or high school years then you’re only proving you have never taken university level psychology courses because there are very logical, biological and scientific reasons why it doesn’t show itself until 19-25 years of age.
Whitney really struggled. She was one of those people who puts on a happy smiley face for everyone she meets. Nobody helped her because they were too busy taking from her and that included her dope-fiend husband who made her problems even worse.
Note Saturn is within that 7° window either side of the exact opposition to Sun. That marks Saturn’s invisibility period so Saturn which is the equivalent of Saturn being under Sun’s beams so Saturn invisible signifies things that are invisible, unseen, hidden, secret or unknown.
If you’re wondering why Saturn is not afflicted by being domiciled in the Aquarius 12th House look at the chart again. Saturn is in a right sextile to Jupiter and in the same degree. That glorifies Saturn but then Saturn is afflicted so the glorification offsets or negates the affliction. Or, if you’re one of those glass-half-empty people then Saturn’s glorification is negated by Saturn domiciled in the 12th House. We’ll cover that later.
One thing we may not have stressed enough is that the opposition must be applying. If the stars have separated from Mars or Saturn then there is no affliction by opposition.
