Containment
Some of you practicing corrupted forms of astrology like Medieval, Renaissance or Classical, or perverted forms like Modern astrology may have heard that Jupiter in the 8th House grants longevity and a peaceful death.
That is true. Who would like to know why it is true?
Before we start, this discussion applies to the benefics (Venus and Jupiter) and the malefics (Mars and Saturn). For purposes of this discussion, we ignore the lights (Moon and Sun) and Mercury since this has nothing to do with them.
Recall that each star casts seven (7) rays:
- left hex
- left square
- left trine
- opposition
- right trine
- right square
- right hex
Now you understand why and if you don’t then review the section on rays so’s you can understand.
Jupiter in the 8th House will cast a left trine ray to the 12th House and a ray in opposition to the 2nd House. The rays box in or contain the 1st House.

See?
If that is the good news, then what is the bad news? The bad news is the presence of a malefic in the 1st House or casting its rays into the 1st House breaks the containment. Remember, we’re ignoring the Lights and Mercury so we don’t care where they are or what they’re doing.
Example 191

Astrology is a rules-based scientific study of Fate. Each chart shows what is fated to happen to a person. For that reason, we must follow the rules laid down more than 2,500 years ago in order to accurately interpret a chart.
The rules of astrology say we must do station-checking. Saturn is stationary. On Day+7 after this person was born, Saturn went retrograde. Notice Mars in Libra which is a violent human sign. Mars cast a left trine ray to the 12th House and a ray in opposition to the 2nd House and both rays contain the 1st House. The benefics (Venus and Jupiter) are neither in the 1st House nor in aspect to the 1st House since they are both in aversion in the 12th House of Bad Fate. Containment is not broken.
While we haven’t covered this yet, notice the Lot of Fortune in Cancer. Notice the 8th sign from Fortune is the Aquarius 12th House and the Aquarius is a violent human sign.
She was murdered by someone she loved, namely, Jupiter. Was Jupiter a member of the clergy? Nope. We know that because Moon in Taurus is the domicile master of the Scorpio 9th House. Was Jupiter a lawyer? Nope. Was Jupiter a doctor? Yes.
That was her fate like it or not. God could have come down from the Heavens and told her that moving in with that guy is the biggest mistake she’ll ever make in her life and she would have ignored God and done it anyway because, you know, “she loves him.”
Princess Grace

Jupiter’s containment of the 1st House is broken by the presence of Mars in the 1st House. We’re showing this chart in part to illustrate the principle that we do not ignore the domicile ruler even when the domicile ruler is not the domicile master.
Saturn is the domicile master of the Gemini 8th House since Mercury in the Ascendant is in aversion to the 8th House and Venus in the 12th House is in a house inferior in rank to Saturn in the 2nd House. When you see the domicile ruler of the 8th House in the 1st House it indicates the person will be indirectly responsible for their own death.
Mars is not under Sun’s beams since Mars is domiciled in Scorpio. Sun and Mars co-present and in this instance also in concourse indicates a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) which could manifest as a concussion, brain aneurysm, brain hemorrhage or stroke. Princess Grace had a stroke. That didn’t kill her and had she been anywhere other than driving in Monaco, she would have survived. Unfortunately. the stroke caused her to lose consciousness and her car left the roadway going into a ravine (Taurus — falling accidents) and had a close encounter with a stationary object, namely, a large rock (that would be the crushing part of Taurus) where she suffered internal injuries and additional head trauma (that would be Libra which is a violent human sign) leaving her in a permanent vegetative state (also note the 8th sign from Fortune is the Capricorn 3rd House).

In spite of Jupiter being retrograde and the non-sect benefic and the domicile master poorly placed, Jupiter still granted her a peaceful death because once she lost consciousness, it was over (meaning she had no idea what was happening), and they pulled the plug on her the following day.
Modern astrologers lie.
Attention whores lie.
Astrology does not.
There’s no mystery or conspiracy here. Prince Grace died exactly the way she was supposed to die according to her chart. That was her Fate, like it or not.
Example 245 (Alan)

Containment is not limited to the 1st House. Any benefic or any malefic can contain any house. In this chart, Saturn casts a ray in opposition to the 4th House and a right trine ray to the 6th House containing the 5th House holding Sun with both benefics in aversion to the 5th House.
The chart is nocturnal. Saturn is the non-sect malefic retrograde in the 10th House and domicile ruler and domicile master of the Capricorn Ascendant. We discussed this chart in the section about USB (under Sun’s beams) and that USB is a degree-based condition, not a sign-based condition and therefore Jupiter who is the domicile master of the Aries 4th House being USB is the reason he is missing, body not recovered.
There’s a reason why we follow the rules of astrology. It’s so we can accurately interpret the chart. Some people might be tempted to choose Saturn as the domicile master of the Aries 4th House because Saturn’s in the 10th. Trigon rulers outrank triplicity rulers. It’s as simple as that. We wouldn’t look at Saturn unless Mars and Jupiter were both in aversion.
Always read the chart. Never knee-jerk just because a benefic or malefic contains a house.
Consider Saturn in the 9th House casting a left trine ray to the 1st House and a ray in opposition to the 3rd House which contains the 2nd House and that is your income, personal possessions, land you own, assets, investments and business partners.
Suppose the chart were diurnal making Saturn the sect malefic and Saturn was in a fiery or airy sign or another familiar sign and the domicile master was well-placed, too.
Then what? Saturn in such a condition can create longevity or those things that are long-lasting or durable. Don’t you want your income and the things you own to be long-lasting and durable? Of course, you do. Never knee-jerk. Read the chart using the rules of astrology.
What happens when a malefic and benefic both contain the same house at the same time with no star to break the containment? What happens if a malefic is functioning as a benefic and vice versa and they contain or break containment, do they get treated like the other.
Hi, again. When a benefic and a malefic contain the same house it cancels out. One negates the effect of the other.
If a malefic is a functioning benefic and contains a house then that indicates good things. Take Saturn in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius or any air sign or earth sign being in the 8th House and containing the 1st House. That’s good.
What are some of the things that Saturn signifies? With respect to life, longevity. With respect to conditions, things that are long lasting. With respect to things, those things that are durable and don’t fall apart or break easily.
Saturn as a functioning benefic containing the 1st House you’d expect someone to live beyond their cohort life-expectancy. The 2nd House, they would retain their income and property, and income is likely to increase over the long-term. The 3rd House, long-lasting friendships or good relationships with siblings and relatives. The 7th House, a long-lasting marriage. Even if Saturn was malefic it would still indicate a long-lasting marriage, just not a happy one. Containing the 11th House long-lasting alliances, associations or dealings and relationships with organizations and entities.
Thanks for the response Spencer. I am still curious if one of the containments are broken, does the other one take over instead of canceling each other out?
Is the cointanment broken only if a benefic aspect the said house or a benefic aspecting a house in which a malefic cast rays breaks the containment as well? For example, Saturn aspecting H12 and H2, containing the H1, is a JUpiter aspect to the H2 or H2 enough to detain the containment?
Simultaneously, what happens when both a benefic and a malefic are in the same sign, like in John Lennon’s chart?
Hello, again. containment is basically a malefic (or benefic) sandbagging a house with its rays. The contained house is sandwiched between the rays of the malefic (or benefic).
Imagine a video game where a malefic in the 6th or 8th Houses contains the 1st House and you’re in the 1st House. If you try to run into the 12th House you’re zapped by the death rays of the malefic. If you try to run into the 2nd House you’re hit by the death rays of the malefic so you’re boxed in. There’s nowhere to run. You are contained.
What you need is a benefic casting its rays into the 1st House to break the containment.
In your example, no, Jupiter would not break the containment. For malefic containment, a benefic has to be in the contained house or in aspect to the contained house in order to break the malefic containment. It works the same way for benefic containment. A malefic in the contained house or in aspect to it breaks the containment.
I’ll see if we can’t put up more charts with contained houses because it is a very real thing than can be positive (if contained by benefics) or negative (when contained by malefics).
Containment isn’t very common which is why we highly recommend people check for it when going around the wheel assigning domicile rulers, masters and lords, because bad things happen and people can’t figure out why, then they go back to the chart and see that house is contained by a malefic and then everything starts making sense.
Thanks for your clear answer.
I’m really struggling to understand this concept. I have both malefics in the 10th (pray for me lol) and my moon in the 1st strongly opposing Jupiter. Would the malefics then contain the 1st house since they make a hex with the 12th and trine the 2nd? Or does a challenging ray have to be involved in containment? If the moon is contained, does jupiter then break the containment since it sends an opposing ray to the moon? I assume if the moon is contained then perhaps Jupiter should be also? Or am I understanding this all wrong?
Hello, MartianGlow and welcome. I like your question. That means we didn’t explain it right so we need to revise the material so everyone can understand it.
One thing that would help your understanding (and we need to add this) is a benefic or malefic can only contain the 6th sign or the 8th sign from the sign it is in.
For your question specifically, a benefic or malefic in the 10th House can only contain the 3rd House or the 5th House. But, if Venus or Jupiter are in the 3rd House or the 5th House or if they aspect the 3rd House or 5th House then there is no malefic containment. You have Jupiter in the 7th House so Jupiter casts a sextile ray to the 5th House and a trine ray to the 3rd House so no worries for you.
Hypothetically, Mars in the 11th House casts a ray in opposition to the 5th House and trine ray to the 3rd House containing the 4th House but Jupiter in the 7th casts a square ray to the 4th House so no containment. Jupiter in the 8th House could potentially contain the 1st House but Saturn in the 4th would cast a square ray breaking the benefic containment.
Don’t automatically fret over malefic containment. Saturn in the Aquarius 9th House casts a trine ray to the 1st House and ray in opposition to the 3rd House containing the 2nd House. Assuming Venus and Jupiter are in the 1st, 3rd or 7th House they can’t break the containment but that wouldn’t be a bad thing.
The principal nature of Saturn is to reject or restrain so Saturn in the 9th in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius would protect your income and prevent losses. Sure, you might lose a little money but not enough to cause you grief or hardship. Even if Saturn were in Leo or Aries in the 9th he’d still protect. Cancer would be a question. If Jupiter was domicile master of Cancer then no problem for Saturn.
