Elevation
If there was one name we could give Greek astrologers that name would be Captain Obvious.
The Greeks wrote by hand using pen and ink and brevity ruled the day. They didn’t state the obvious, like using whole sign houses. For many techniques outlined they were short on method. The prevailing attitude seemed to be if you’re an astrologer you’ll get it. If you aren’t then you won’t. We touched a bit on how data is corrupted being transmitted from language to language and culture to culture. For example, the 10th sign from Venus in a diurnal chart or the 10th sign from Moon in a nocturnal chart indicated whether the mother’s children had the same father or different fathers. That got corrupted into “the mother is the 10th House.”
The Greeks never said that the 10th sign from Sun in a diurnal chart or the 10th sign from Saturn in a nocturnal chart indicated whether the father had children from the same mother or different mothers. Why not? Because that would be stating the obvious. Where in the texts do the Greeks identify the conditions that would elevate or glorify a star? They don’t because that would be stating the obvious. If a star is struck by the rays of both malefics, or enclosed by malefics or in the same degree as a malefic then astrologic says a star struck by the rays of both benefics, or enclosed by benefics or in the same degree as a benefic is elevated or glorified rather than afflicted or maltreated. You can use the archaic term “bonification” if you want. Beatification might actually be better. We like elevated.
What are those conditions that elevate or glorify a star or make a star bonifed? It draws on the concepts we’ve covered so be sure to have a complete understanding. A star is elevated when:
- The stars are struck by the rays of both Venus and Jupiter
- The stars are enclosed by the benefic rays of Venus and Jupiter by figure or bodily joining
- The stars are engaged to Venus or Jupiter in the same degree or Venus is engaged to Jupiter in the same degree by a hex, square, trine or opposition figure
- The stars are engaged by Venus or Jupiter by contact, or Venus engages Jupiter within 3° in the same sign
- The stars are overcome by a right trine from a benefic located in an advantageous house (Venus or Jupiter overcome each other when in a right trine from an advantageous house)
- The domicile master of any star is located in the 1st House or 10th House
- Any star is domiciled in the 1st House or 10th House
