Moon Phases

Those are the seven Moon Phases.
Considering Moon’s position relative to Sun, the hex is the crescent moon; the square is the quarter moon; and the gibbous moon is the trine.
The New Moon period is not a phase and Moon is not visible when she is within 15° on either side of Sun. Note how each Moon phase corresponds to the hex, square, trine and opposition.
Moon is mildly benefic and functions best when the chart is nocturnal and Moon is waning. You want to see a waxing Moon in a diurnal chart.
Waning Moon helps Venus and Mars (and Mercury if he’s part of the nocturnal sect) but waning Moon harms Jupiter and Saturn when configured to them (and Mercury when part of the diurnal sect).
Waxing Moon helps Jupiter and Saturn (and Mercury when diurnal) but harms Venus and Mars (and Mercury when nocturnal).
Void of Course Moon
The Greek phrasing of this is “Running in the Void.” Antiochus tells us:
“Running in the void is said whenever Moon does not join with any star, neither zodiacally nor portionally, and neither by adherence nor by figure, and nor indeed it is about to make a conjunction or meeting within the nearest thirty portions; and that this figure maltreats the nativity.”
Some things to help you when reading Greek texts. “Zodiacally” means by image/sign. “Portionally” means by degree. “Adherence” is what most people call a “conjunction” and what we call co-presence, concourse, joining, bodily joining or bonded. “Figure” means a hex, square, trine or opposition. “Conjunction” means either a hex, square, trine or opposition or bodily joining/bonding (with another star). “Portions” is usually translated as “degree” but that is actually damaging because “portions” really means “portions of fate.”
Okay, class, Sister Mary Elephant here:
Class, what charts are we doing? Natal charts!
Class, what branch of astrology is natal astrology? The natal/mundane branch!
What does the natal/mundane branch of astrology have to do with horary or electional charts? Not a damn thing!
Very good. You get a cookie.
Be warned that this definition is not the same as the one used in electional or horary astrology. We don’t care what the definition is for horary or electional charts. The branch of astrology for inception, election and horary charts has it own rules, methods and techniques for the unique nature of those charts and they do not apply to natal or mundane charts.
Natal Charts
Mundane Charts
Horary Charts

♪♫ One of these things just doesn’t belong ♫♪
Antiochus said, “….nor indeed it is about to make a conjunction or meeting within the nearest thirty portions;..”
Note the use of the pronoun “it” instead of the pronoun “she” to describe Moon and that’s because the stars have no gender and have nothing do with the Greco-Roman gods of the same name.
Antiochus says to look at the next 30°. When Moon is at Aries 5° and you go 30° where do you end up? At Taurus 5°.
Based on this definition, the Moon must change signs. We don’t care what the egomaniac William Lilly said because we ain’t doing horary charts. These are natal charts and Moon must change signs.
Suffice to say you’ll probably never see a Void of Course Moon in a natal or mundane chart. Antiochus (and others) say it maltreats the entire chart and that means those people are nobodies who live miserable lives and end up buried in Potter’s field so it ain’t like they had celebrity status. We were unable to find any chart examples but we did find three charts that will illustrate the idea so’s you can understand it.

One thing you’ll notice is these two charts have the same birth date. They were born 45 minutes apart and they are close in Space & Time since Cleaver was born 3° north and slightly west of Beard. Skeptics will bring up the issue of people born at near the same time and place so we’ll go over these two charts in detail later since they’re virtually identical and had remarkably similar lives.
Notice both have Sun opposition Saturn indicating a difficult death 100% of the time in 100% of charts. As of this writing, we have found no mitigating factors.
Astrology is real. What you see in a chart is what happens to people whether you like it or not and whether you want it to happen or not. If you have Sun opposition Saturn you will die a difficult death. Get over it already. It ain’t the end of the world. A difficult death just means disease or illness. It may or may not shorten your life. Singer Helen Reddy also had Sun opposition Saturn and she died at age 78 in hospital from renal failure (caused by Addison’s Disease). Sun opposition Saturn is not the only indicator of a difficult death. A difficult death is not the same thing as a bad death or a violent death.
Cleaver died at age 62 in hospital suffering prostate cancer and complications from diabetes. Beard died at age 52 in hospital from diabetes complications and other problems.
The charts we’ve shown you to this point do not have mitigating factors. We always look for mitigating factors. Then again, Buddy Holly had a glorified Sun and that was not enough to mitigate.
The charts of Cleaver and Dean both have Moon at Libra 2°.
Moving Moon 30° puts Moon at Scorpio 2° and because Moon’s orb is 13° (due to Moon’s daily movement rate) Moon enters into a hex figure with Sun and a trine figure with Saturn, so no joy here.
If Sun would be at Virgo 16° or later and Saturn at Pisces 16°, then, yes, that would be a void of course Moon.
What we really want you to see is how the stars would need to be positioned in a chart in order to have a void of course Moon.

Moon at Sagittarius 0° will move 30° to Capricorn 0°. Since Moon’s orb is 13° Moon will be joined with Jupiter and Venus.
Was this chart maltreated?
This person committed suicide but that isn’t why we’ll study this chart in detail. He has a twin sister and that is why we’ll study this chart so you can understand twins in the same way you can understand two (or more) people born on the same date close in time and space.
Again, Antiochus said, “…nor indeed it is about to make a conjunction or meeting…” and we wonder if he did not mean by degree rather than orb. If he meant by degree then Moon is void of course and maltreats all three charts which explains a lot about their lives. If he meant by orb then Moon is not void of course but even so, the lives of those 3 people did not go well at all.
Pay attention to Moon if it appears to be void. Three charts is not enough to split hairs between orb and degrees. We prefer the standard 2,683 charts when making a declaration.
When the Moon is a guarded star or a bodyguard does she still harm stars by her phase (waxing or waning)? For example, if someone has a Waxing Moon that is forming a figure to Venus by hex but Moon has a star spear-bearing for her, would she still harm Venus or no?
Dear Authors, could you elaborate some more on the topic presented in this article?
I don’t quite get it, I admit.
For example, in the last male’s chart discussed above if the Moon is moved 30 degrees then it joins two benefics: Jupiter and Venus and yet you imply that this is no good. I got confused.
Also, I understand that the void course would be if the Silver Globe wouldn’t change signs, right? How is that possible if in one of your examples here the Moon moves from 0 degree of sign to another sign= changes signs anyways.
Would it be possible to name some rules how to interpret it, so it would be more clear, e.g. the Moon in the first 2 and last 2 degress isn’t good etc. or something like that? I mean something similar to what you wrote about assigning lords to houses= there are some rules step by step to follow.
Hey, Aleksandra, the void of course Moon in natal chart is very rare. The definition of void of course is not the same as it is in horary or election charts.
The major difference is that in an horary chart, the Moon must make an aspect before it changes signs or it’s considered void of course.
In a natal chart, the Moon must change signs because you’re looking for aspects the Moon makes in the next 30°. Effectively, you’re moving Moon 30° to see if it makes aspects and if you move the Moon 30° then it must change signs, right? If Moon is at Virgo 5° and you’re looking for aspects the Moon makes in the next 30° then you have to see if Moon at Libra 5° makes aspects to other planets which means Moon changed signs.
This is a very rare occurrence. Between the 4 of us we have nearly 20,000 charts and not one of them has a void of course Moon.
We searched high and low on the internet and still couldn’t find any natal charts with a void of course Moon.
That makes sense to us because the Greeks said anyone with a void of course Moon has a very unfortunate life so such people wouldn’t live very long and they’d never be famous or even be infamous so no one would have their birth data.
The best we could do is we happened to find 2 charts that almost had a void of course Moon. Ironically, both men were born on the same day about 45 minutes part on the nearly the same longitude but on different latitudes (one was born in Texas and the other in Oklahoma).
The question we can’t answer is does Moon need to make an aspect by degree or does an aspect by orb count? The Moon is the only body with an orb and it’s 13° since Moon’s daily motion is about 13° per day.
The point was to show void of course is very rare and not going to happen unless you see a chart where all the stars are co-present in the same sign and very late in degrees and Moon is in the adjacent sign or all the stars are in 2 different signs in sextile to each other and Moon is in-between.
This explains a lot. Thank you very much :).
Does Moon not being visible indicate the same things as being under the beams? Do we check to see if Moon goes under the beams as well or no?
Hey, Water Elemental. Yes, it does indicate the same things. Some of the best gamblers have Moon under Sun’s beams. Card players I should say. If James Bond had a chart, he’d have Moon under Sun’s beams. Okay, waxing Moon under Sun’s beams.
How do you interpret a star or Moon sinking under the beams 7 days before or after death?
I apologize I meant 7 days before/after birth.
I would love if the topic of Moon moving away or towards/forming an aspect was gone over.
