From time-to-time as you go around the wheel identifying domicile masters you’ll find houses in the chart that do not have a domicile master.
What does it mean?
You’re about to learn and you’ll also learn why we said we shouldn’t joke about it.
Again, it’s a simple IF…THEN…ELSE drill-down.
- If the house ruler does not aspect its house then it cannot be the domicile master so look at the exaltation ruler.
- If the exaltation ruler does not aspect the house or if there is no exaltation ruler then look at the trigon rulers.
- If the trigon rulers do not aspect the house then look at the triplicity rulers.
- If the triplicity rulers do not aspect the house then hope they are sympathetic signs.
For your convenience:

Astrology is a rules-based scientific study of Fate.
Astrology is the original WYSIWYG.
What you see in a chart is what will happen guaranteed. The only two questions are how many times will it happen and when will it happen. It behooves you to follow the rules of astrology to the letter with no deviation so that you can accurately interpret a chart and make accurate predictions to understand your life or the lives of the people whose charts you are reading.
Let’s get started.
Whitney Houston

The Pisces rising.
House ruler Jupiter is in aversion in the Aries 2nd House. The exaltation ruler is Venus. Venus is in aversion in the Leo 6th House. The water trigon rulers are Moon, Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter is already disqualified. Moon is co-present with Jupiter and Mars is in aversion in the Libra 8th House. The water triplicity rulers are Moon, Venus and Mars who have all been disqualified.
Pisces is not a sign of sympathy.
The 1st House in Whitney Houston’s chart has no domicile master.
Even worse, both Lights, the Sun and Moon (sect light and sect leader) are in aversion to the 1st House.
If you’ve read Hellenistic texts, (we think) it was Rhetorius who mentions both Lights in aversion to the Ascendant/1st House indicates a short life-span. That isn’t entire true. There must be other factors in the chart and no domicile master for the Ascendant is one such factor.
Maybe it was fortunate Whitney had no stars in the 1st House. It speaks volumes about her life. She was never really in control. She was a puppet with her talent controlled and manipulated by her parents until it was controlled and manipulated by her managers and producers until it was controlled and manipulated by her husband Bobby Brown who got her addicted to cocaine because, apparently, that is what a loving spouse does.
Sun opposition Saturn means what 100% of the time in 100% of charts? A difficult death.
Whitney died at age 48 drowning in a hotel bathtub from a cocaine-induced heart attack. Aquarius is a watery sign just like Capricorn but watery sign is not the same as water sign although the water signs are also watery signs.
Freddie Prinze

Who is the domicile master of the Sagittarius 6th House?
House ruler Jupiter is in aversion in the 9th House (and exalted). Sagittarius has no exaltation ruler. The fire trigon rulers available are Sun also in aversion in the 9th House and Mars in aversion in the 3rd House. The fire triplicity rulers are Sun, Jupiter and Saturn. Sun and Jupiter are in aversion and disqualified. Saturn is in aversion in the 1st House.
Sagittarius is not a sympathetic sign.
There is no domicile master so the 2nd House is chaos.
Freddie Prinze was 22 years old and the star of his very own TV show in 1976 and NBC gave him $6 Million.
Perspective.
It’s 1976. Freddie Prinze just got handed $6 Million. Baseball player Pete Rose shocked the entire world by demanding the unheard of salary of $600,000 per year to play baseball. With the possible exception of Brazilian soccer player Pele, no athlete on Earth made that much money. In fact, Rose was the highest paid athlete since he was already being paid $425,000 per year.
And Freddie Prinze just got handed $6 Million.
In 2025 U.S. Dollars, $6 Million is the equivalent of $35 Million.
How did Freddie Prinze handle that? Not very well. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
When you learn how to correctly interpret charts there are two things you’ll discover. The first thing is that exalted stars can cause tremendous harm and damage. The other thing you’ll discover is Sun in a water sign in the 9th House is problematic.
If you did your station-checking, stationary Mercury is still stationary on Day+7 turning retrograde. We did we say about stationary planets?
It’s stronger! No, you never use “strong” or “weak” in astrology.
Isn’t Mercury the domicile ruler of the Gemini 8th House? Yes, it is.
House delineation principle: Domicile ruler of the 8th House in the 9th House.
What does that tell you?
No such thing as “foreign travel” in astrology. The 9th House (like the 3rd House) is “travel away from home” or “being away from home.” If you insist on doing it your way and saying it’s “foreign travel” when it is not “foreign travel” then you will always interpret charts wrong and so what’s the point? If you’re going to interpret charts wrong, why even bother with astrology? Maybe you should find a more suitable hobby like under-water basket weaving.
Freddie Prinze was born in New York but died in California which is exactly what the chart is telling you since being in California is not being in New York.
Yes, Freddie Prinze “was away from home.”
Wait a minute! Lots of people relocate to other cities and die there. Why don’t their charts show the domicile ruler of the 8th House in the 9th House?
What a great question.
Why do you suppose some charts indicate it and some don’t?
When you can answer that question, you’ll be doing the art of astrology and on your way to becoming a good astrologer.
By the way, notice Venus is the domicile master of the Taurus 7th House, the Gemini 8th House and the Libra 12th House.
Karen Carpenter
Who’s the domicile master of the Pisces 9th House? Not Jupiter. Jupiter is in aversion in the Aquarius 8th House. Venus is the exaltation ruler of the Pisces but Venus is co-present Jupiter in the 8th House and also in aversion. The water trigon rulers are Moon, Mars and Jupiter. We’ve disqualified Jupiter. This chart is a freaking Greek tragedy. Moon and Mars are both in aversion in the 2nd and 4th Houses respectively. What’s next? The water triplicity rulers are Moon, Venus and Mars and we’ve already disqualified them.
“Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You’re our only hope.” Sorry, Pisces is not a sympathetic sign which was our last hope.
There is no domicile master for the 9th House.
Remember, the stars do not rule signs. The hierarchy is:
- Sign
- Bounds
- Star
Stars are at the bottom of the pecking order. You can tell your house or apartment or flat to do the dishes, take out the garbage, feed the dog and put the cat out but it’ll never happen. Your home will just sit there silently (or maybe creaking and groaning). You can’t boss your home around but you can boss around the people in your home and that is what the stars actually do.
The stars have ZERO power over the signs and bounds. They only have power over other stars in their signs or bounds.
When a house has no domicile master and the house is empty that’s bad enough as we showed you in the previous two charts, but when there are stars in the house it’s even worse.
Why?
We’ll help you with the art of astrology. What is the drill-down process to find the domicile master all about?
In a word: Affinity.
You start with the house ruler who obviously has affinity since it’s their house. Then you go to the exaltation ruler (if there is one) who has the next highest level of authority and affinity. Then you move onto the trigon rulers who are the house rulers of the signs of the same element and they have affinity and are the next highest authority. That they rule signs of the same element is what creates the affinity. Lastly, you go to the triplicity rulers who have affinity with that triplicity.
When the house has no domicile master and stars are in that house that means those stars have zero affinity with that sign.
Right?
What we’ve done is define the concept of stars being in an “alien” or “unfamiliar” sign. Most of the definitions you’ve heard are wrong or misleading.
A star is in an alien or unfamiliar sign when it has no affinity to that sign because it is not the house ruler, not the exaltation ruler, not a trigon ruler and not a triplicity ruler or helper.
Stars in an alien or unfamiliar sign don’t want to be there. In fact, given the choice of being in an alien-unfamiliar sign or being in Afghanistan they’d choose Afghanistan. Stars in an alien-unfamiliar sign are like the house-guest from Hell. On steroids. Squared. And there is no domicile master to boss them around or give them orders or control them. They will wreak havoc.
The only saving grace is a star in an alien-unfamiliar sign and in its own bounds. But what about the Lights? Granted we haven’t covered the system of bounds yet since that’s an advanced concept and you all need to be focused on setting up the chart right, doing your station-checking, identifying the domicile masters, judging the conditions of the stars, and getting your initial impression of houses and configurations.
Having one of the Lights in a house with no domicile master is devastating. In Karen Carpenter’s chart it’s even worse since the chart is diurnal and Sun is the sect light and sect leader.
We haven’t yet provided all the significations of the stars (we only showed their natures). Sun signifies life, action and spirit in the sense of psyche or what most would call “personality.” Moon signifies the body, health and emotions. Now that you know that, you can see how devastating it can be to have one of the Lights in a house with no domicile master.
In Karen’s chart that’s made worse since Moon is in aversion to Sun.
The 9th House is wisdom and learning in addition to government and authority, fellowship in wisdom and learning and travel away from home often related to either wisdom and learning or government and authority. Contrary to the whack-jobs in Modern astrology, the 9th House is also esoteric and occult matters and divination, not the 8th House.
How do you accomplish wisdom and learning?
With your brain which is why a 9th House without a domicile master is an indicator of mental illness and either Light being present in the 9th House tells you not just a mental illness but a dangerous mental illness.
Note Sun opposition Saturn. As we’ve mentioned numerous times already, Sun opposition Saturn means a difficult death and it means that 100% of the time in 100% of charts.
You can breath. You can blink. You can cry. Hell, you’ll all be doing that but this is, after all, real astrology not some biker acid trip fantasy like Modern astrology or Funshine astrology.
Let’s look at the Virgo 3rd House in the chart. Mercury is house ruler and exaltation ruler but Mercury is in aversion. The available earth trigon rulers are Venus and Saturn. Venus is in aversion in the 8th House with Mercury. Saturn in Virgo is the domicile master making her mental illness worse.
Saturn is the domicile ruler and domicile master of the Capricorn 7th House. What does retrograde mean?
Retrograde means someone or something will suffer a serious set-back, major reversal of fortune or circumstance, be rejected, thwarted, denied or frustrated, or ruined or destroyed or things will fall apart and it means that 100% of the time in 100% of charts no exceptions ever.
What happened to Karen’s marriage? What does retrograde mean?
Something else we want you to see.
Saturn is in aversion to the Aquarius 8th House. Since Aquarius is not a sign of exaltation we go to the air trigon rulers Mercury and Venus who are both in the 8th House.
What do we do? Take the star of the sect.
The chart is diurnal. Mercury is of the diurnal sect so he is the domicile master of the Aquarius the 8th House.
What if the chart were nocturnal? Then Mercury and Venus would be of the nocturnal sect. Now you’d have both air trigon rulers (Mercury and Venus) and both are nocturnal in the 8th House. Venus gets the call. Take the star of the same sect that is in the earliest degrees of the sign.
Also, note that Saturn is within that 14° window of invisibility (see that section for more details). That signifies something invisible, unseen, secret, hidden, internal or unknown. Carpenter kept her illness hidden from others who did not know about until it was too late. By that time, her mental illness (anorexia nervosa) had caused irreparable damage to her internal organs, including her heart.
Sun opposition Saturn is a difficult death 100% of the time in 100% of charts (barring any X-Factor! mitigation).
Carpenter died of heart attack just one month shy of her 33rd birthday.
Sun opposition Saturn does not automatically mean someone dies an early death although it is true the majority of them never collect their first pension check. But there are those who live a reasonably long life-span. Helen Reddy was age 78 and there are others who died in hospital or hospice care or in a long-term care facility or at bed-ridden at home.
Gus Grissom

We’re focusing on the Cancer Midheaven (the 10th House).
House ruler Moon is in aversion in the Sagittarius the 3rd House. Exaltation ruler Jupiter is in aversion in the Aquarius 5th House. We go to the water trigon rulers Moon, Mars and Jupiter. Moon and Jupiter are disqualified. Mars is in aversion being co-present with Jupiter. We go to the water triplicity rulers Moon, Venus and Mars. Moon and Mars are disqualified. Venus is co-present with Mars and Jupiter in the 5th House.
Recall our discussion on sympathetic signs. Cancer-Leo are one set of four sympathetic signs. If Sun would be in the Leo 11th House then you would assign Sun as the domicile master of the Cancer 10th House.
Sadly, Sun is exalted in the Aries 7th House so there is no domicile master for the Cancer 10th House.
When you see this in a chart it often indicates a career that is cut short abruptly. Death will certainly do that but that is not the only thing that can end a career. A serious injury or illness or a scandal can do the same.
Grissom was one of three astronauts in the command module of Apollo 1 doing a routine systems check. Faulty wiring caused a flash fire made worse since the interior of the command module was 100% Oxygen. The engineers who designed the command module and who would likely never be in a command module ever in their lives designed the hatch to open inward, instead of outward. Had the hatch opened outward one or more of them might have survived.
In case you were wondering, Moon is the domicile master of the Pisces 6th House and Saturn is the domicile master of the Virgo 12th House.
Great analysis as always. Can you talk more about sympathetic signs? If I can recall the arabs used to refer them as like-engirding signs. Does a star in Capricorn and a star in Aquarius makes an aspect to each other even if they are in the “dark places” from their perspectives?
Hi, Lucas. The like-engirding signs are Gemini-Virgo with house ruler Mercury and Sagittarius-Pisces with house ruler Jupiter. If there is an interpretive principle, we don’t know what is is. We regret we cannot direct you to a source since none of us are aware of any texts that delineate it. It’s curious because they simply mention in passing, “Gemini-Virgo and Pisces-Sagittarius are the like-engirding signs” and then they drive on with no further comment.
The sympathetic signs are ruled by the same star:
Aries-Scorpio with house ruler Mars
Taurus-Libra with house ruler Venus
Capricorn-Aquarius with house ruler Saturn
Cancer-Leo with Moon-Sun as house rulers
The Moon and Sun are not planets. They’re the Lights and they’re both sect leaders and considered to be two halves of a whole (the Thema Mundi illustrates that). Mars in Scorpio will still exert some influence of Aries but Mars in Gemini is not going to influence Aries or Scorpio.
Suppose you have Jupiter in Capricorn and Venus in Aquarius. Technically, they’re in aversion to each other but since Capricorn-Aquarius are sympathetic signs they’re “connected” and we treat that as Venus-Jupiter being co-present but the effect is not very prominent meaning you probably wouldn’t notice it. One effect Venus-Jupiter produces is charm. Will it be overtly obvious to others the person is charming? No, in this instance very subtle.
But what if Venus and Jupiter were neighboring? They’d be in the same bound and have the same bound ruler and the bound ruler will tell you how that charm manifests. Suppose the bound ruler was Mercury. It would manifest as intelligence or maybe the way they speak.
Thanks for asking.
Thank you very much for all that information- it really does help a lot.
Could you point me how to decide who is the master of the 1st house Scorpio (I’m trying to interpret my friend’s chart) if both Moon and Jupiter are in the 11th house and Mars and Venus are in the same degree in the 4th house??
Welcome. Please make yourself at home. Scorpio is not a house of exaltation. Mars in the 4th House functions as both domicile ruler and master of the Scorpio 1st House. The issue is one of “testimony.” Just as a witness sees an event can can testify to that event, the stars have to be able to “see” their houses. Mars in the Aquarius 4th House can see Scorpio and that allows Mars to control the 1st House.
The problem is when a star cannot “see” its house because it is in a sign that makes no aspect. The house ruler will always be the domicile ruler and show us what happens but the star that controls the house determines what happens. We start with the exaltation ruler and if there is none we go to the trigon rulers, then the triplicity rulers. If there is no other star in control, that is a serious problem not only for that house but for the person whose chart that is.
Thank you once more for your infomative insight and warm welcoming :). I appreciate it.
Do I get it right then that the 4th house is more important than 11?
Does the fact that Mars and Venus are in the same deegree in Water-Pourer change anything in how Mars operate? Does it elevate Mars?
The master of the 1st in the 4th means that person life’s purpose is to establish a solid support base and start a family? My female friend has in the 4th also her Sun and Saturn, so this house stick out prominently in her chart.
Hello, Aleksandra. Yes, you got it right. Venus is a benefic and when applying within 3° to a star elevates or bonifies that star. That means Venus elevates Mars in your friend’s chart. Mars should function better as a result of that but if Saturn as domicile master is in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th House he’ll he negate that, or if Saturn is domicile ruler and the domicile lord of the Water-Pourer is in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th House they’ll negate the bonification and Mars is just Mars however Mars is in the chart.
The interpretation of Venus-Mars depends on whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal and also whether Venus-Mars are in their rising phase or setting phase. If Sun is in the 2nd or 3rd House that’s the setting phase but if Sun is in the 5th or 6th House Venus-Mars will be in their rising phase.
If that’s o.k., I will ask another question, so I am sure I understand everything correctly: Venus bonifies Mars but at the same time Mars maltreats Venus, is that correct?
If believe if Venus is the one applying then she bonfires Mars. If Venus were retrograde and Mars was applying within 3° then she would be afflicted/maltreated.
That’s a very interesting topic. If I may add an observation, I’ve noticed that the famous singer Katy Perry has no domicile master of her 2nd house of Sagittarius, with Venus there. Venus is also the domicile master of the 8th and the 12th.
If you Google her name and search for lawsuits, you will see several cases in where she was involved and won. The most famous seems to be a lawsuit over her trademark, where she was sued by a designer and proceeded to won the case. As of now, she seems to be countersuing a case over a $15M mansion.
I wonder if in her case, as Venus occupies the 2nd and is the master of the 12th and 8th, Venus benefits from being in a house with no domice master or we are yet to see a financial chaos in her life?
That is interesting.I also wonder if Katy Perry may not live that much longer if she has no domicile master of the 2nd Place.
Hi, Water Elemental. I know Katy Perry’s chart. Moon is domicile lord of the Scorpio 2nd House. It’s actually the Sagittarius 3rd House that doesn’t have a master. Most people will mess it up because the chart’s nocturnal and Moon is below the horizon. The Lot of Spirit is actually the Lot of Fortune.
I’ve read Marco posts on the Quora website saying that most programs calculate lots wrong. You write similarly here, so I’d like to ask for a recommendation what to use to get lots calculated correctly.
I am using the website Astro Seek, here are links:
1.) https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/zodiacal-releasing-astrology-calculator
2.) https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/arabic-lots-parts-astrology-online-calculator
Is this a good resource to use or is there a mistake in how it calculates lots?
Hey, Aleksandra, the issue with the Lots is the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit.
Several texts mention that sometimes Fortune is Spirit and Spirit is Fortune. Sadly, they don’t always elaborate on what conditions cause Fortune and Spirit to change.
We know one of the conditions is that Fortune in a masculine sign and Spirit in a feminine sign we change the Lots. Like Donald Trump’s chart. He has Fortune in the Aquarius 7th and Spirit in the Pisces 8th House.
We know we reverse them. So in his chart, the Lot of Spirit is actually in the Aquarius 7th House and the Lot of Fortune is actually in the Pisces 8th House. And we know that because using zodiacal releasing from the Lot of Fortune it activate Saturn who was retrograde transiting his natal 8th House of lawsuits which tells us all those criminal lawsuits filed against him get dismissed. And they did.
Hello,
Why in Katy Perry’s case, Moon’s domicile lord of Scorpio? Mars is in Capricorn in a sextile aspect to Scorpio.
I get that the the time of birth chart may be wrong and she might be Libra rising instead of a Scorpio Rising, but the domicile ruler, Mars, is still seing its own house from a sextile.
Oooops! Wrong chart. Mars rules her Scorpio 2nd and is exalted in Capricorn. The birth time doesn’t matter although it might where water and earth signs are concerned and Moon is in the late degree of sign. Moon could potentially change signs during that 24-hour period and gain rulership.
Robert Kennedy doesn’t have a domicile master for the Sagittarius 8th. He was assassinated at age 40. Nicole Brown-Simpson was murdered by her husband. She didn’t have a domicile master for her Gemini 4th House.
Katy Perry has Libra-rising which makes Mars the killing planet. He’s exalted in the 4th co-present with Jupiter and they’re in concourse and neighboring in Jupiter’s bounds. That is so not cool.
RisingMars- I get the feeling that whenever the Scorpio sign is involved there is always some form of intensity involved-be it emotional, legal, even financial or some intense thinking etc. I am curious if others see it that way too.
Hello, again!
I’ve come to a reverse question – what if a planet is not a domicile master of any sign or place in a chart? Does it have any impact?
