Points & Features on a Chart

The Wheel is counter-intuitive. The left side is East; the right side is West; the top of the Wheel where the Midheaven (10th House) and MC Point are located is South; and the bottom of the Wheel where the Subterranean Place (the 4th House) and IMC Point (same thing as the IC) are located is North.

  • The Ascendant holds the image rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, the formation of any country or other entity, or the time an event occurs.
  • Ascending Degree refers to that portion of an image rising at the exact moment of birth usually marked with “As” or “Asc”.
  • Descending Degree (“Ds” or “Dsc”) refers to the corresponding point opposite located in the image of the Setting Place (the 7th House).
  • The MC Point and IMC Point (IMC = IC) are on the ecliptic of the Sun’s path as it “travels around Earth”.
  • The horizon line is the imaginary line formed by the Ascending and Descending Degrees.
  • Everything in the hemisphere above the horizon line is “above the Earth” or “above horizon” indicating those things that are visible, open or public.
  • The area or hemisphere below the horizon line is “below the Earth” or “under the Earth” or “below horizon” indicating those things that are hidden, closed or private.
  • The imaginary line formed by the MC Point and IMC Point (the line is not shown) divides the Wheel into an eastern or rising half and a western or setting half.

Do not read too much into that because certain combinations of stars can indicate things are private even though they are above the Earth. Such things may be revealed later (or not) becoming public, or open or visible. Likewise, things below the Earth may be hidden or private initially but later they may become visible or public.
